On Thursday 16 July, AIchemy Hub and the Physical Sciences Data Infrastructure (PSDI) welcomed researchers and data professionals to the University of Southampton for Transitioning from FAIR to AI-Ready Data in the Physical Sciences. The interactive workshop explored one of the key challenges facing data-driven research today: how we move beyond FAIR data principles towards datasets that are truly ready to power the next generation of AI and machine learning.
From the outset, the event fostered an open and collaborative atmosphere, bringing together participants from across academia and industry to share experiences, discuss challenges, and exchange ideas. As AI becomes an increasingly important tool across the physical sciences, the workshop provided a valuable opportunity to reflect on the practical steps needed to ensure scientific data is not only accessible and reusable, but also fit for AI-driven discovery.
The morning featured presentations from invited speakers who offered a range of perspectives on creating AI-ready datasets. Speakers explored lessons learned from developing research data infrastructures, approaches to improving data quality and interoperability, and the importance of building trustworthy datasets that can support robust AI and machine learning applications. Throughout the sessions, speakers highlighted both the progress already being made and the challenges that remain as the research community works towards common standards for AI-ready data.
Following a networking lunch, participants took centre stage during a series of lightning talks, showcasing emerging projects, innovative approaches, and real-world experiences from across the physical sciences. These presentations sparked lively discussions that continued into the afternoon’s interactive breakout sessions, where attendees worked together to identify practical solutions, share best practice, and explore the future of AI-ready data.
One of the strengths of the workshop was the diversity of expertise in the room, contributing unique perspectives, creating rich discussions around metadata, standards, reproducibility, benchmarking, and the evolving requirements of AI-enabled research. The collaborative format encouraged participants to learn from one another while helping to shape future thinking across the community.
