On Thursday 18 June, AIchemy Hub welcomed a fantastic audience to The Spine in Liverpool for Science in the City: An Evening of AI, a celebration of how artificial intelligence is transforming research, healthcare, and innovation across our city and beyond. The event brought together researchers, professionals, students, and members of the public, all united by a shared curiosity about the opportunities and challenges presented by AI.

Set against the backdrop of Liverpool’s stunning skyline, the evening provided an opportunity for attendees to hear directly from leading experts working at the forefront of AI across a range of disciplines. From the moment guests arrived, the atmosphere was one of excitement, conversation, and discovery as people from different backgrounds came together to explore how AI is shaping our world.
Our speaker programme showcased the breadth of AI research taking place across Liverpool. Professor Andy Cooper from the University of Liverpool shared insights into the use of AI in materials chemistry and scientific discovery, highlighting how advanced computational approaches are accelerating research and helping scientists tackle complex challenges.
Professor Katie Atkinson explored developments in artificial intelligence research and the important role AI plays in supporting decision-making and innovation across society. Her talk encouraged thoughtful discussion around the future of AI and its responsible use.
Representing The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Dr Alex Batty demonstrated how AI is being applied within healthcare, particularly in improving prostate cancer treatment and patient outcomes. His presentation offered a powerful example of how AI is already making a tangible difference in people’s lives.
Dr Gabriella Pizzuto from the University of Liverpool provided a fascinating look at the intersection of AI, robotics, and scientific research. Her work on intelligent automation and robotic scientists illustrated how AI is helping researchers accelerate discovery and reimagine the laboratories of the future.

One of the highlights of the evening was the diversity of the audience. We welcomed professionals already using AI in their work, members of the public keen to learn more about emerging technologies, and local community members excited to see the innovation taking place across Liverpool. The questions, discussions, and conversations throughout the evening reflected the growing interest in AI and its impact on society.
The feedback received has been overwhelmingly positive, with attendees praising both the accessibility of the talks and the opportunity to engage directly with experts. The evening demonstrated the value of creating spaces where research and innovation can be shared openly with the wider community.
A huge thank you goes to our speakers, attendees, and everyone who helped make the event such a success. As the sun set over Liverpool’s beautiful skyline and conversations continued long after the final talks had finished, it was clear that Science in the City had achieved exactly what it set out to do: bringing people together to explore how AI is shaping the future of science, healthcare, and innovation.
We look forward to seeing you at our next event!
